The excuse is that to erect a barrier at the mouth of the river (like the Thames but not so complex) is expensive. The £10m that is going to be the present cost of lifting the height of the banks as far as the A259 would be better spent on saving the Arun valley for the next 100 years by building a barrier that would stop the highest of tides from flooding everywhere.
