HOLLINGTON United footballers will be swapping footie boots for trainers to run in the Hastings Half Marathon and raise funds to finish their new changing rooms.
They are encouraging supporters to join their team and run in memory of former players Steve "Smudger" Smith and Iain Johnson, known as IJ.
Steve died in a motorbike accident last year while former Observer employee Iain died of Sudden Adult Dea
th Syndrome in the 90s.
Hollington United player and good friend of both men, Dave Grass, is organising the half marathon fund-raising.
He explained: "We started building the new changing rooms in memory of IJ after we held an auction which brought in thousands of pounds.
"We have since joined with the Greater Hollington Partnership to complete the project as the building will be for the whole of the community.
"It needs finishing off inside now with things like showers to be installed. We are aiming to raise about £20,000 to pay for all the work and we are also hoping local firms might be able to help with equipment.
"Anyone who wants to run under the Hollington United banner in memory of both Smudger and IJ should contact me so they can start training now."
Once the changing rooms are ready for use Hollington United can return to their pitch at Gibbons Memorial Field, off Wishing tree Road.
It currently costs £900 a year for their three teams to use council pitches for their games because they do not have adequate facilities.
Interested runners or anyone wanting to help should contact Dave at dave.grass@lineone.net or 07790910002.
