Omitted eight included on Eatergate war memorial

The names of servicemen from the parish who gave their lives for their country in the second world war have been finally added to the famous structure. The details of the eight men had been overlooked in the six decades since the conflict ended until Eastergate Parish Council recently decided to put the situation right. Councillors arranged for the names of the fallen servicemen to be listed on the memorial, a grade two listed structure because of its historical significance to the area, ready for this year's Remembrance Sunday services. Those finally honoured were: Elwood M W Bolton, John R A Boulton, John W Cutts, Cecil Davis, Robert C Daniels, William J Hammond, Arthur Simmons and Victor G May. The formal recognition of the sacrifice made by the men took place in a service at the memorial at the junction of the A29 and Barnham Road. Fr Anthony Churchill, from the Roman Catholic parish of Bognor Regis with Barnham and Slindon, and the Rev Simon Holland, the rector of Aldingbourne, Barnham and Eastergate, officiated at a joint service of dedication. Each of the names of the fallen servicemen were read out. Eastergate Parish Council chairman Cllr Michael Hutton laid a wreath in their memory.
