Readers send in nursing pictures at Eastbourne hospital
Glynis Chappell, a ward sister at Downside Hospital and then Princess Alice, writes, “I was firstly on Arundel ward for three years then Kingston ward for 13 years and we had a very happy hospital caring for the elderly.”
Glynis’s pictures show staff at Downside Hospital in 1978 just before the move to Princess Alice, Arundel ward staff, Kingston ward staff, the Kingston ward staff Christmas party and ward sisters at Princess Alice in 1978.

Keith said, “Gildredge Hospital, next to the recreation ground in Longland Road, opened in 1914 and was then known as the Eastbourne Sanatorium.
“By 1930 it had been renamed the Eastbourne Borough Tuberculosis Hospital. It ceased being a hospital in 1974 and the land was sold off for housing.
“The three guys in the photo, from left to right, are some of the ambulance staff involved and are Brian Field, myself and the person with his back to the camera is Alan Palmer, who was the officer co-ordinating the move.”
